Medical Missions at Home

Over the last four years, thousands of free medical services and procedures have been provided to Middle Tennesseans through Saint Thomas Health’s Medical Missions at Home. Created as a project of the Ascension Health Leadership Formation program, these day-long community health events provide needed primary and specialty care and services including:

  • Behavioral medicine
  • Dentistry – pediatric and adult
  • Foot and wound care
  • Mammograms
  • Prescriptions at no cost – made possible by the Dispensary of Hope
  • Vision services

Saint Thomas Health also sponsors Medical Missions Overseas, bringing medical care to areas outside the United States.

Medical Mission at home
Service of the Poor…
It’s one of the core values of Saint Thomas Health and we live it by reaching out to the poor and underserved in our community.

On Saturday, October 25th, we wanted to provide needed medical care for a thousand people who otherwise couldn’t afford it.

The Health Ministry’s event, “A Day of Hope, Healing and Health,” was held on Saturday, October 25. The goal for this year’s event – provided through a collaboration between Saint Thomas and other Nashville-based agencies – was to care for more than 1,000 low-income and uninsured people.

On this day of “Hope, Health and Healing,” Saint Thomas Health and more than 20 other agencies offered free medical care for the persons most in need, including dental care, vision services, prescription medicines and more.

Hickman County

Medical Mission DentalOn April 12, 2014, Saint Thomas Health completed its 15th Medical Mission at Home in Hickman County. Hickman County is one of the poorest counties in the United States. Now we have over a hundred volunteers at each Medical Mission who serve as many as 300-400 people providing over 600-700 patient encounters in 4-5 hours. We have been providing Medical Missions in Davidson, Rutherford, and Hickman Counties. We have served over 2500 patients providing nearly 10,000 patient encounters. Our Medical Missions have expanded over the years as we saw the need for more onsite services. Our Missions now include free Primary Care Services, Physician Specialty Care, Ophthalmology, Optometry, Dental Services (Hope Smiles), Pharmaceutical Services/ medications provided by the Dispensary of Hope, Behavioral Health Care, Respiratory Therapy, Physical Therapy, Hearing Screenings, Foot Washing and Spiritual Care.

Everyone gets involved. Volunteers included, but are not limited to:
Physicians, administrators and managers, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, therapists, counselors, ophthalmologists, optometrists, dentists, dental specialist, residents (medical, dental, nursing, etc.), mission directors, pastors, chaplains, audiologists, podiatrists, nurses, technicians, clerks, dietary (feeding the missionaries--very important), registrars, facility services, teenagers, and CEOs.

Medical Mission Foot WashingOur Medical Missions started out small, but determined. Now we are much larger and ever more determined to serve those who are the poorest among us and uninsured in an interdisciplinary, holistic, reverent manner. Every place we go, every place we are invited, we are standing on holy ground, sacred ground...the poor and vulnerable are among us. We enter as volunteers...we leave as missionaries. God is present...among us, through us, and in us as we serve "our masters...the poor." Truly we see the face of God in the poor and vulnerable at every mission where we serve.
